Is it free?
Yes - totally free, and we aim to keep it that way! We're hoping to expand into other languages, whilst keeping Welsh and other resurgent languages free
Is Tiwtor a course?
No. There's no fixed path. You choose what you learn - whether it's from our collections or your own & then drill through flashcards and the surrounding exercises
Northern or southern Welsh?
Pick one when you sign up. Our collections come in both flavours. If you're learning a more specific variant of Welsh, you can create custom phrase lists, or search for user created phrase lists.
How is this different to e.g. Anki or SaySomethingInWelsh?
We like to think that we combine the customisation of Anki, with the simplicity of SSIW! The flashcards work similarly to Anki, and hands-free mode will feel familiar to anyone who has used SSiW. We provide collections for you to pick from, but you can create your own phrase lists and exercises, driving your own welsh learning journey.
Does it work offline?
Flashcards work offline. Audio playback generally requires a connection unless you've encountered it before. 'Mark for offline use' is coming soon, and will make listening exercises and more available offline.
Do I need any Welsh to start?
No. Our flagship collection starts with greetings and everyday basics and builds from there. If you've got some Welsh already, dip in wherever looks interesting, or bring phrases from your class: nothing forces you through a fixed path.
Is the audio real people or AI?
Some of each. We're slowly replacing AI generated audio with real audio (want to get involved in that and earn some ££? Click here!). If you create your own phrase lists and exercises, real audio will be used where available otherwise audio will be generated for you. We use the latest audio models from Elevenlabs when costs & limits allow!
Can I add my own phrases?
Yes. It's a big part of Tiwtor. Type them in, paste from a document, or describe a topic. Then generate phrase lists and exercises.
Will you add other languages?
Yes. More coming soon - Irish is next. We started with Welsh because our founder is a long suffering Welsh learner and we feel it's underserved by mainstream apps. Longer term we are hoping that expansion into other languages can fund underserved languages like Welsh & Irish keeping them free!
Some features are marked as beta, alpha or early access. What does that mean?
Tiwtor is a work in progress and you'll almost certainly notice things changing as time goes on. We would much appreciate any feedback you can give us
